Tips For Choosing a Gas Engineer

When you’re about to have work done on your home using a gas engineer, you need to be sure that they’re all they’re cracked up to be and that they have all the requisite qualifications, training and certifications, and that they come with the relevant experience. You can’t be sure unless you’ve asked the right questions.

We’re going to be giving you some tips on how to choose the right gas engineer for you and someone who’ll have all the qualifications and experience you need to get the job done safely. It’s better to be on the safe side because gas is dangerous in the wrong hands, and could cause a serious accident resulting in injury to one of your loved ones, and in some extreme cases even death.

The Gas Safe Register

This register is your guarantee that the gas engineer you’re thinking of hiring is all they say they are. The Gas Safe Register is a list of all gas engineers who’ve made the grade in terms of qualifications, ability, training and certifications. If they’re not on that list, you have no guarantee they’re qualified to work with any gas appliance - and that spells danger.

You’ll need to make sure you have the engineer’s details in full so you can check they’re on the register. They have a very clever online tool which helps you check your engineer against their list to see if they’re registered. The phone number for them is 0800 408 5500. You can also check the list via the official website. Gas engineers who are properly listed will have a licence number which is on an ID card issued to them annually, and this will have their 7 digit licence number.

Experienced in the specific area of work you require.

Ideally, you want someone who has relevant experience in the area you require work. That might be boiler repair, installing a gas installation complete with radiators, or maybe it’s for an annual inspection of your boiler. Boiler installations, for instance, would obviously require a lot of skill and experience so you want to make sure you have the right person for the job.

It’s all in the detail

Make sure you get a quote that comes with the right kind of detail, and by detail, we mean in writing rather than a quick one over the phone. You want a quote that has all of the costs broken down so you know exactly what your quote includes and what it doesn’t.

Payment

Don’t be tempted to give in to a request for all of the money upfront, and certainly not in cash. They should offer you a variety of different payment options and quote you for the entire job rather than a day rate. If they charge you per hour, then it could cost more, and leave open the potential for them to stretch the job out so it takes longer.

Explain without the jargon

A good gas engineer should be able to describe the job and how they’re going to do it in a simple clear fashion without any of the jargon. For most people, gas and the dangers involved are pretty much a mystery, so an engineer that’s willing to explain how they’re going carry out the job is worthwhile. It doesn’t have to be chapter and verse, but a simple and clear explanation about the reasoning of how they’re going to undertake the job at each step will go some way to putting your mind at ease and help give you more confidence in your engineer.
