The Most Common Boiler Repairs

What type of boiler repairs are we used to seeing? There are a few that crop up regularly and we’re going to be taking a look at some of them in this article. If you have a way of identifying what they are, you may be able to repair a few simple ones yourself. It also helps you to know when a professional needs to be called out, rather than struggling alone or making repairs that you should leave to a trained engineer.

No heating but you do have hot water.

This is a common problem. Your boiler as you’re aware, should provide you with both hot and cold water and heat. However, this isn’t always the case. If you have no central heating and the water is still working, what could be the problem? Well, it could be that there’s a problem with the thermostat, check the settings on it, the thermostat is there to control the temperature on your heating system, and if it’s not doing its job then there may be a problem. Increase the boiler pressure if you know what to do, otherwise call out an engineer.

Sometimes you have hot water but no heat.

This could be down to a number of different factors, such as an airlock perhaps or a faulty motorised valve or possibly even the diverter valve, the latter is only applicable if you have a combi boiler. If any of these apply then do call us and one of our Gas Safe engineers will be able to diagnose the problem and sort it out for you - safely.

Are you finding that there’s no heat or hot water?

Again, there could be a variety of different reasons for this. There should be an error code that will help tell you where the problem lies, this is helpful to you or to an engineer. The reasons can vary from fuel not reaching the boiler (especially applicable if it’s an oil type boiler), the thermostat settings not working or set appropriately, the pipes are frozen due to adverse weather, low boiler pressure, or a pilot light may have gone out if you have an older one.

Noisy boilers.

Noisy boilers can be bothersome with their gurgling, whistling and banging. It can be down to anything from a build up of sludge, components coming loose, loose pipework or malfunctioning electrical components and blockages.
