Keeping Your Boiler in Good Condition During Winter
We want to talk to you about boiler maintenance to keep your boiler in good working condition during the winter months. We’re still in the autumn season of colder temperatures, rain and wind, but once the leaves have fallen, the weather will probably turn a little bit nastier. It’ll be more than a bit of rain and wind, and no doubt we’ll have plummeting temperatures to contend with. It’s at times like these that you'll be needing your boiler to work efficiently.
What happens though if my boiler breaks down?
It couldn’t happen at a worse time than in the middle of cold weather and freezing temperatures, but this does happen to people all the time. The thing is, it could be avoided by just being a little more attentive throughout the rest of the year and making sure everything is in place for a smooth, nicely heated home during the coldest time of the year.
What can you do to keep your boiler in tip top condition during the winter seasons?
Boiler service
It’s important to keep your boiler in excellent condition so that when the temperature goes down your heating system can go up a notch to keep you and your family warm and cosy. One way of doing this is by making sure you have a regular boiler service and check from a reputable plumbing company. That way you know your boiler and heating system are all working adequately and are up to the job. Not only that, it could save you money on future energy bills by addressing any anomalies in your boiler’s system.
Under pressure
Always make sure you check the pressure on your boiler because if it’s too high or low it could mean your heating system isn’t going to work properly. The average pressure it should be sitting at should be around 1.5 on average so if it is significantly below that, it may be time to re-pressurise it yourself or get someone you trust or a plumbing engineer to do it for you. Sometimes, it can be a sign that your radiators need to be bled when the pressure is low on your gas heating system.
Powerflush
This is when a powerful gush of water is sent throughout your heating system to remove sludge and any other debris that may be blocking the radiators and preventing them from working adequately. This isn’t something that needs doing every month or even every year. It can be done every 5 years, but it can make a substantial difference to your central heating system.
Insulation
By insulating your pipes you will help prevent them from freezing during the winter months. You can do this part yourself without hiring a plumbing engineer if you feel confident. It’s simply a case of measuring your pipes and then buying the lagging that you would use to wrap your pipes in, which you can get at any reputable DIY store. They’re usually made of foam and can be fitted snugly around your pipes to stop them freezing.
